Developer of the “Chula Technique” for Frontoethmoidal Encephalomeningocoele Surgery

Professor Dr. Charan Mahatumarat was born in Ayutthaya. He received his primary education at Wat Kudi Lai School and his secondary education at Ayutthaya College and Triam Udom Suksa School, respectively. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Chulalongkorn University in 1973 and began his medical career at Sappasitthiprasong Hospital in Ubon Ratchathani. Later, he pursued training in general surgery at the Department of Surgery, Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University, where he worked as a general surgeon for some time. He then joined the Faculty of Medicine at Chulalongkorn University as a lecturer in the Department of Surgery. Awarded a prestigious scholarship from the Anandamahidol Foundation, he continued his studies in Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery in Australia and the United States, specializing in complex facial and skull reconstructive surgery. He obtained board certifications in general surgery and plastic surgery from the Medical Council of Thailand, as well as additional certifications in craniofacial surgery from institutions in Australia and the United States.

Professor Dr. Charan dedicated his career to academic and surgical excellence in plastic surgery at Chulalongkorn University. In 2006, he was appointed Professor of Surgery and retired from government service in 2009. In recognition of his lifelong contributions, he was bestowed the title of Professor Emeritus in 2011. Despite his retirement, he continues to serve as Head of the Princess Sirindhorn Craniofacial Center at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital and the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University—tirelessly working without remuneration to help patients in need.

In 1986, after completing his studies abroad, Professor Dr. Charan established Thailand’s first multidisciplinary Craniofacial Team at Chulalongkorn University, bringing together experts from twelve different fields. This pioneering initiative set a new standard for craniofacial surgery in Thailand and Southeast Asia, a field in which the country previously lacked expertise or yielded suboptimal results.

Under his leadership, the Chulalongkorn Craniofacial Team performed thousands of life-changing surgeries for patients from across Thailand and neighbouring countries. Many of these patients were treated under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, and members of the Royal Family.

In 1987, he founded the Craniofacial Research and Patient Assistance Fund, ensuring that patients with severe craniofacial deformities, often from impoverished backgrounds, could receive life-changing surgery free of charge. To further this mission, he officially established the Princess Sirindhorn Craniofacial Center in 2003, in honour of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s 48th birthday. In 2005, Her Royal Highness graciously granted the center its current name.

The center remains a beacon of hope, treating patients without discrimination based on social class, ethnicity, or religion. All medical services, including travel and accommodation costs, are fully covered by donations through the Thai Red Cross Society, allowing underprivileged patients and their families to receive the care they deserve at no expense.

Professor Dr. Charan has also spearheaded nationwide surgical initiatives in honour of significant royal milestones, such as:

• His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 80th and 84th Birthdays
• Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s 80th Birthday
• Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s 48th, 50th, and 60th Birthdays

Recognizing the emotional toll of severe facial deformities, he launched the “There is Still Hope” Program, offering psychological and social support to patients and their families. This initiative provides a compassionate space for those awaiting surgery to connect with post-surgical patients, sharing experiences and encouragement. A dedicated team of doctors, nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers ensures that every patient feels supported—both medically and emotionally—on their journey to recovery.

Through unwavering dedication, Professor Dr. Charan Mahatumarat continues to transform lives, offering not just surgical expertise, but also hope, dignity, and a brighter future for those in need.
